NORWAY - Gerd Serrasolses HIghlights Summer 2012

For the last two past years I've always wanted to go and visit Mexico during fall, however summer injuries have forced me to stay home and recover for the spring. Finally I could kinda made it this year, but was definitely bummed my bro couldn't make it with me this time to show me around as after two years they say he's a legend over there!

So last October I packed all my stuff and took a plane to Mexico, having quite a few problems and more layovers that desired (4), I finally arrived in Mexico after a couple of days of traveling without my boat. I took a bus straight to Tlapacoyan, one of the coolest towns I've been in the middle of the jungle of Veracruz.

Even though I didn't have my boat for the first week I was lucky enough to borrow from friends and go kayaking everyday. We were staying in Aventurec, a super nice resort in the middle of paradise. Great food, orange trees everywhere, tidy gardens and super nice people make Aventurec the perfect place to stay. So everyday we would go paddle one of the many great runs that Alseseca and the Jalacingo have to offer. We started running the second half of Big Banana from Silencio as the drive, shuttle and hike in were a lot easier, and I think that's become the classic run now. Super nice start with Silencio, and then plenty of other cool rapids down to Tomata bridge. Short run, so you can lap it no problem.

Silencio

The Tomatas, one and two are just downstream of the take out, so you can keep on going, ran both of them and then paddled the Tomnata gorge aka the Seven Sisters/Siete Hermanas; as the name says, seven consecutive different style drops. Super nice section, and if you don't feel like T2 you can rappel into the pool which looks sick!

Tomata 2

 Dirty Sanchez

The upper Jalacingo offers some great bed rock slides and rapids, however there's a bit of wood now so gotta walk some too! The lower is super clean and nice, offering three major drops; Twisted Pleasure, Dirty Sanchez and Dungeon, but the stuff at the start and mostly in between is just amazing, plenty of little boofs and continuous white water makes it one of the best sections around. Last is a massive portage known as the Black Hole, definitely not runnable!

Twisted Pleasure

After about three weeks of boating I was lucky to have paddled most of the sections at least twice, however there's still some stuff that I'm missing… gotta go back sometime!

Overall, a great trip to one of the best destinations in the world, tropical frute everywhere, cheap food/life, great culture, nice people and good times!

The New York Times' Michele Sibolini.

The Extreme Photo of the Week at the National Geographic website was taken this winter in Uganda, at the Kalagala rapids.
That day we went boating together with a russina crew and a photographer who works for 'The New York Times' Michele Sibolini. We started above 'the Dead Dutcman' and paddled all the way to Kalagala where Michele took this shot you can see all week at the National Geographic.

We then paddled Hypoxia and kept on going till the take out, long day! Great day on the water and super happy to be featured on this great photo at the prestigious magazine/organization that is National Geographic.

Noruega - part II

It's already been more than two months since I first arrived in Norway, and in a few days I'll be flying home again. This summer's been just amazing, being able to paddle everyday with all my buddies, without major injuries and being able to enjoy kayaking and life to the fullest in some of the best rivers in this amazingly beautiful country is just unbelievable.

First one on Marinjuvet, so clean!

A long time dream... Nosebreaker!

I've been super lucky to paddle lots with a bunch of great people, traveling with Mathias's van from river to river, camping everywhere, paddling… just enjoying the norwegian summer with great company on some of the best rivers I've ever paddled. Road side saunas, barbecues with free expired meat from supermarkets, blueberries everywhere…

At the lip of the third one on the Sogndal!
Low water Bygdaelva, still great!

It's been really cold lately, and we are definitely into autumn… rivers are getting low, however there's still plenty of stuff to do… there are endless possibilities here to paddle! Looking forward to get home and enjoy some sun and some boating with friends as well.

Low water Lower Myrk!

I just want to thank everyone who's helped out in this trip, the Bomb Flow boys (Evan, Fred and Anton) for the footage, Sweden for the great photos, Morten for the good times and the sauna, Jakub and specially Mathias for his enormous help and knowledge on the different rivers and Martin for letting us stay at his place and help pout with everything! Thank you guys, you made things great and sorry for the not mentioned!

NORGE!

Night HDR of Voss

I've already been in Norway for over 20 days now, and I've had some of the best times ever on the water. After a few years focusing on freestyle and having a hard times with injuries and recovery with way too much time out of the water, being back in Norway and paddling amazing white water everyday is one of the best feelings you can have.

Aniol stoked at the lip of Flemmings Fossen at 200+ cumecs... BEAST!

Big Girl, nice first D Marian!

It was here in Voss where I badly injured myself last year, running a cool rapid but misjudging it... I tried to learn from that and now I'm a lot more cautious when scouting or running a rapid. So far I'm super stoked about being injury free and just feeling better day after day.
After running Hellesylt with Evan

Dropping into the Sjoa...

Last rapid on Lower Myrkdal, Holy Diver!

I've been road tripping with Matias, Fred and Evan, Anton and Mikael and my brother Aniol who unfortunately got injured the first day I got here... sending him good vibes and hope he recovers quickly and we can charge together soon! We've been paddling a bunch, Voss, Telemark, Sjoa and a few more things around ...definitely we've been super lucky with water levels! We've paddled some of the best runs in Norway, in incredible places, and there's still so much potential... Norway really amazes me!

Upper Songdal, big water! One of the best runs around!

Having a good flight at Matze's, sick one Matze!

Thank you everyone who made my trip so good thus far, a lot more to come!

20/7/12

because when you run the shit... sometimes you get fucked!

Teigdal is one of the best sections I've run in norway. Lots of rapids, drops and sick slides. Not further than 30 min from Voss is my favorite one so far and got a lot of potential... still a super stout first D in there for the ones who want to go big and doesn't care about landing on a few rocks!
Mathias van!  the beast that has been moving all of us during this months in Norway! thanks so much Papa for your help all these days!!!

It has been 18 days now since my accident on the double drop. I've been doing freestyle on the double drop for a few days before, getting back freewheels of the first and second drop, It did work out really good... So after we ran the whole sectionI stayed lapping the double. Level was good and I was sticking my lines. I  even got the double switch freewheel on my first try. For some reason I didn't stop after that, I did a normal run and then went for another one. another time in my life where I've done something that I should totally haven't.
stoked before to go for the back to back freewheel.
switch freewheel on the second drop. you have to be fast so after landing the first drop  you turn backwards and go for a sitchfreewheel! wooop! pic by nouria newman!
movie still of the same trick
walking again and again to the top of double drop. ran it like 14 times during the days it worked... probably one of the most fun rapids on earth but I wish I could go back and skip that las ran...
Jordalsevi big time!
landing it  a little bit flat...
Instead of just running normal I went for a switch freewheel of the first and didn't notice till the landing that I was a bit too much right. I landed flat against rocks, felt my ass breaking and my back receiving the whole hit of what it has been to date the biggest impact of my life… something insane…
I rolled up just before the 2nd drop and somehow had an all right line, lost the paddle on the impact and had to hand roll… running the second fall with the fucked'up back was savage… I knew since the first moment that something was wrong, they helped me getting out of there jumped on the bed of Mathias van took some heavy pain killers and drove straight to the hospital. On the first view of the x rays norweigan doctors couldn't notice any fracture or anything else...but I knew something was wrong. This last week I've done the MRI and they found out that i have a fracture on the L5, wich sucks but in the end might be better than a compression or having to do surgery.. I am super lucky to get a full recovery, don't know how many months I have to rest but gonna heal up this injury good!

go pro shot landing the first switch freewheel.
sick angle from Dr. gnar of the double trick
same crazy ass move on the river fuy, chile
Back to back freewheel! footage is sick! bomb flow 12 FIRE and also a good entry for the downriver freestyle on rider of the year awards!!!
Anyway I am staying positive and gonna do a lot of Gym before go back in my kayak, so I come back stronger than ever. This accident has made me realize how fragile I am. When I fuck up a line hard I always get injured that's because I don't have any muscle to protect my bones. Gonna change that and this fall In Mexico I am coming back on fire, big plans for that mission!!

Also check this interview with the Norweigan TV NRK featuring some sick freestyle on Jordalselvi! go straight to min 15 for it!
